ITESM Dual Degree
IIT Stuart School of Business has been collaborating with the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (“ITESM”), located in Monterrey, Mexico, for the last five years. The partnership was born out of the desire to encourage the Mexican student community to work in the environmental management and sustainability field.
Program goals
The Environmental Management and Sustainability curriculum emphasizes options for pollution prevention and waste minimization that improve economic efficiency, global competitiveness, and corporate financial performance while meeting broad societal goals. You’ll learn numerous strategies to achieve competitive advantage through social equity, economic viability and environmental integrity, all with an emphasis on the importance of sustainability at both the global and enterprise level.
What will this Dual Degree program do for you?
Participating in the Dual Degree program will give you the opportunity to complement your engineering skills with a business and environmental management education.
At IIT Stuart, you will benefit from classrooms that are multicultural and very diverse. You will interact with a combination of working professionals enrolled as part-time students to improve their career, as well as full-time students interested in enhancing their professional skills. This will enrich your learning process and augment your experience abroad.
Upon graduation you will have all the necessary tools to fill environmental management positions in Mexico, in a wide range of areas including manufacturing, service, consulting, not-for-profit, and government.
Structure and Program Requirements
In order to accommodate the schedule of ITESM students that are required to study at an institution outside of Mexico for one full year, IIT Stuart will allow the ITESM students to begin their studies at IIT Stuart in the Summer or Fall terms and spend twelve consecutive completing all of the required courses for the MS in Environmental Management & Sustainability degree. A student could also select to take classes at IIT Stuart in two separate six-month sessions while studying at ITESM between the two sessions.
The ITESM student will then return to ITESM and complete the required courses to earn a BS degree. Upon verification that the BS degree has been awarded, IIT Stuart will award the student the MS degree.
IIT Stuart will award credit for two courses (6 credit hours) taken at ITESM; therefore the student from ITESM will have to take a course load of 27 credit hours, rather than the required 33, equivalent to nine semester courses.
Prior to starting the second term in IIT Stuart’s MS in Environmental Management and Sustainability program, the student must take the GMAT or GRE exam and receive a minimum score of 500 or 1000, respectively.
Application Process
The ITESM student will be allowed to begin studies at IIT Stuart in the Summer term or the Fall term. No student will be allowed to commence the program in the Spring term.
IIT Stuart must receive the completed application form and all of the supporting documents by March 1 for the Summer term and by June 1 for the Fall term.
Hear from successful alumni
Stuart was a great experience; I met people from all around the world. The EM program really gave me a set of skills that I did not have to analyze problems from different perspectives and it also put me in contact with very qualified and respected teachers.

The EM&S program at Stuart was one of the best experiences of my life. To begin with, my English dramatically improved (in large part due to my American classmates). At the same time, I had the opportunity to meet people from an array of countries, giving me the chance to better appreciate their culture and traditions. What's more, I learned to live on my own, pushing me to grow as an individual, while getting to know myself better.
The EM program not only forced me to work harder, but it also taught me valuable lessons in regards to a pressing issue we face today: that of a more sustainable society. Because I was a student of the MS in Environmental Management and Sustainability program, I had the opportunity to intern at the Global Sustainability Department of Newell Rubbermaid. After my return to Mexico, I continue to be employed by this company, and thus I continue to put in practice all the valuable lessons I gained from the Stuart School of Business.
On a more personal note, after this experience, I left Chicago having made excellent friends, relationships that I know will last for a very long time. Yet, the most important thing for me was realizing that I CAN DO IT. That if I set my mind to it, I can do just about anything. I am now a more confident person because of it.
This was definitely the opportunity of a lifetime!

When I was evaluating opportunities of international programs as in IDP student, I ended up with two choices: Germany or Chicago. The catch was this: going to Europe to travel all year long and study some random double degree, or going to Chicago, live in a cosmopolite city in the US, and study the Environmental Manager Masters degree at Stuart Business School.
Today, I am working in the environmental department of an international food-producing company, with headquarters in Monterrey. I am travelling more than what I would have in Germany, and I have the expertise in an area which is just starting to grown in Mexico and around the world. Environmental management is the trend in any industry, and Stuart offers the best opportunities for Mexican students.
Armando Quintanilla
The Environmental Management program at Stuart provided great value to me and improved my knowledge of the situations that the world is currently living. The way the program merges the environmental and sustainability topics helped me see things from a different perspective. One of the most valuable experiences was having the chance to take courses with people who were already working and had jobs within this area, bringing their past experiences to the classroom.
Now that I currently have a job in this area, I can easily say that the EM masters program was one of the reasons I was hired. I think this program gives you an advantage over many people, because it turns your point of view around and makes you consider sustainability and the environment first; not many people can do this! Professors were great sources of knowledge and the school environment was inviting. Stuart represents an important and defining chapter in my life.
