Dual Degrees
The Dual Degree Options at IIT Stuart
Description: Whether you want to pursue a career in entrepreneurship, corporate law, or the private sector, a dual degree will help you realize your professional goals. MBA dual degree programs are designed to combine specialized interests with a business and management perspective. IIT Stuart offers you the option to combine an MBA with a JD or an MPA, offered in conjunction with the Chicago-Kent College of Law, or an MBA and an MS in Environmental Management, Finance, or Marketing Communication. An MS/JD combination is also offered with each of the MS programs.
Admission Requirements: Candidates for a dual degree program must apply to and be accepted by each program separately. Current LSAT scores are required for admission to Chicago-Kent College of Law. Current GMAT scores are required by IIT Stuart’s MBA degree program, but current LSAT scores may be substituted by applicants to the MS programs. Interested students should call the IIT Stuart Office of Admission at 312.906.6576 or email us at admission@stuart.iit.edu
Program Requirements: Both degrees are usually earned in three to four years of full-time study or five years of part-time study. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by as many as ten courses. Simultaneous enrollment is required for varying periods of time, depending on the program. To help plan a program of study, students will be assigned advisors from both programs in which they are studying.
You have the choice of the following dual degree tracks:
B.S./M.P.A.
The requirements for the B.S. in Political Science/M.P.A. degree may be completed in five years of full-time study. Qualified students interested in careers in the public sector are encouraged to begin their preparation at the undergraduate level and follow a course of study that will allow them to move directly into the MPA program. For detailed information, prospective students should contact the chair of the Social Sciences Department.
J.D./M.P.A.
A J.D./M.P.A. program, offered in conjunction with IIT's Chicago-Kent College of Law, allows students to receive both a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Public Administration degree in a reduced time period, depending on undergraduate preparation. This program is particularly valuable for administrators, whose work is guided and circumscribed by a web of legislation, rules and judicial decisions, including persons interested in city management, labor and personnel work, police administration, and public policy analysis. Students must be admitted to both programs separately. For detailed information, prospective students should contact the coordinator of the J.D./M.P.A. program, Professor Scott Peters.
MBA/JD
A solid understanding of the business world can be invaluable in many areas of law, especially for corporate attorneys or legal/management consultants. Through this program, you will combine the management expertise and business skills of an MBA with a law degree. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by as many as ten courses (five law and five MBA). The JD/MBA program is offered in conjunction with Chicago-Kent College of Law, which shares a state-of-the art facility with IIT Stuart.
The MBA/Master of Public Administration program is ideal for students who intend to work in an environment that combines aspects of both public and private sector management and for those who expect to move between business and government positions during their careers. IIT's MPA program is housed at the downtown Chicago campus.
A combination of 16 core courses (nine MBA and seven MPA) and nine electives (five MBA, two MPA and two chosen from either program), for a total of 25 courses, makes up the joint curriculum. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by as many as eight courses.
Three joint degrees are offered that combine the MBA with a Stuart MS degree program in environmental management, finance, or marketing communication. These programs are designed to prepare students for management-level positions in one of these areas or to start up their own companies. Both degrees are usually earned in three years of full-time study or in five years of part-time study. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by as many as five courses.
The Joint MBA/MSF degree comprises 30 courses all together, with 18 courses from the MBA stream and 12 from MSF. In this way students are exempted from 2 courses for each of the MBA and MSF degrees. However no MBA (MSF) courses or electives credited towards the MBA (MSF) degree can also be credited towards the MSF (MBA) degree as this would be crediting a course twice. Each course can be credited to at most one degree.
Further note that the 12 courses towards the MSF degree must come from the MSF stream and do not include any electives as the student is regarded as having taken 18 such electives already and the degree would no longer carry enough financial content to warrant the name MS in Finance. Also it doesn't matter in what order the student undertakes the mixture of courses from the MBA and MSF streams, only so long as the necessary pre-requisites are satisfied.
The joint MDes/MBA degree combines advanced methods for exploring new theories of design with an understanding of the business applications of technology and analytic methods. MDes/MBA graduates are uniquely well qualified to lead collaborative, interdisciplinary, global innovation organizations. Both degrees are usually earned full-time in two to three years plus one quarter. The length of the program depends on the student’s experience and background. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by seven semester hours in MDes and two courses in MBA.
Two joint degrees are offered that combine the JD degree from Chicago-Kent with a Stuart MS degree in Environmental Management & Sustainability and Finance. These programs are designed to prepare students for careers in the legal profession with emphasis on the environment or finance. Both degrees are usually earned in three to four years full-time, or five to six years part-time. Dual enrollment can reduce degree requirements by as many as nine courses.
