Michael Jay Fagel currently consults for several agencies on homeland security issues and has been involved in many phases of public service. He has authored five textbooks including Crisis Management, which earned the textbook of the year award from the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) in 2014.

Fagel is an editor of Principles of Emergency Management and Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), 2nd edition, published in both print and digital formats by CRC Press in September 2021 (copyright year 2022), which was selected as the 2022 ASIS Security Industry Book of the Year. This is a handbook designed to be used by practitioners to understand how to create effective training and exercise emergency management programs. The book covers planning for a wide range of critical incidents from agroterrorism to pandemics to active shooters to large scale public events to the impact of social media on emergency management.

In over four decades of public service, he has worked in fire service, emergency medical service, public health, law enforcement, and emergency management as well as corporate safety and security. Since 2003, he has supported many phases of homeland security operations in numerous capacities.

In addition to teaching at Illinois Tech’s Stuart School of Business, Fagel teaches Homeland Security at Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, and Benedictine University’s Masters in Public Health Program, and is an instructor at Eastern Kentucky University in their Safety Security Emergency Management Masters program.
